Learning to Learn & Unlearn
Management Education today is on the cross roads which are not confined
to business management alone. The last decade of 20thcentury has brought
in a total revolution in human life. The advent of internet era has a
potential to change the face of the world and mankind in the short
future
Several years, we have made efforts to gather information, experiment
and form a body of knowledge which could be transferred to the
generations through the educational systems, schools, high schools,
colleges, institutions, etc. which ultimately aimed at developing human
civilization on the earth.
It is observed that the quantum of knowledge doubled after every 30
years in the beginning of the 20th century. After 1970’s, it doubled
after every seven years. Now in 2001 – 02 it is getting doubled every
month and in 2010, it will take 11 hours to double the quantum. This
situation is characterised by a rapid obsolescence of knowledge and
poses a serious challenge before educators to decide which knowledge is
to be institutionalized and transferred to the generations.
Now the time has come to shift our emphasis from knowledge to
consciousness. Besides acquisition of essential knowledge, which is
comparatively easier today, we must try to awaken students and make them
able to learn and unlearn things faster and at ease.
We, at the Institute, are consciously trying to cultivate the habit in
our students to take a holistic approach towards the things happening
around. The consciousness keeps their right brains fertile to grasp the
valuable learnings from seemingly simple things. For instance, unrained
clouds in ‘Lagaan’ bring in the discussion on financial implication on
agrarian community. The building of cricket team in the same movie has a
potential to conduct several HRM discussion classes where learning is
deeper and deeper.
Similarly unlearning, creative destruction is also a part of our
endeavors at the Institute. The HR laboratory processes throughout the
year enable students to unlearn various illusionary thoughts, beliefs,
notions, assumptions and orientations. Students have a fresh view of
themselves and the world around at the end of the course.
